The Opposite of Poverty is Not Wealth
The opposite of poverty is not wealth
Today I am sharing with you a quote I saw at my friends’ home today. It expresses an impactful message. The quote was made by lawyer, Bryan Stevenson, during his 2012 TED talk, “We Need to Talk About an Injustice.” It reads,
“The opposite of poverty is not wealth. The opposite of poverty is justice.” – Bryan Stevenson
Stevenson, founder and Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama, has dedicated his career to helping the poor, the incarcerated and the condemned.
Compassion is essential
During his TED presentation, he says that as a culture, we need to care as much about policies that embrace compassion, human dignity and caring for the poor as we do about technology, innovation and entertainment.
This man is spot on. Poverty is not just the simple absence of wealth. When we don’t think or care about the poor we diminish the humanity of people and rob ourselves and others of experience and equality.
Dignity and equality for all
As a society, I feel we need to come together to rethink and reshape our values. It is time that we pay attention to the poverty and injustices that exist in our complex world.
We must respect the basic human dignity of ALL people regardless of their current socioeconomic status. Let’s embrace the good AND the bad… the development, the challenges and the suffering happening around us.
Our humanity as a culture depends on EVERYONE’S humanity. <3
