Hello to my favorite peops!
As many of you know, I’ve been collaborating with Team Vetscape, a non-profit, veteran-operated organization which helps veterans find their next mission in life. Vetscape empowers fellow veterans with self-confidence and dares them to dream big in their new phase of life after the military, through the planning, training and execution of outdoor expeditions and adventure races. It is a group genuinely devoted to improving the lives of veterans.
I jumped onto the Vetscape team last month as a coach to help four combat-veterans complete The World’s Toughest Mudder (WTM), an extreme 24-hour obstacle course race… and complete it they did! All members rocked the event and I am both proud of and impressed with how well each person did on the course, especially since it was everyone’s first obstacle race!
Here is a quick recap of their results:
- Fred-Lewis (Farmer-Fred) Curtis: 55 miles
- Amanda (The Hammer) Mathew: 50 miles
- Ryan (Mer-Man) Lundbohm: 30 miles (sidelined by a knee injury)
- Mike (The Bear) Sarkies: 15 miles (sidelined by a knee injury)
United in one mission
These Vetscape athletes came from three different states (Florida, Georgia and Hawaii). Their pit-crew support team was a blend of people from seven states! The WTM race provided the arena for military veteran athletes, family members, and civilian supporters to come together to accomplish a united mission… and it was an absolute blast working with everyone involved!
Veterans can accomplish colossal feats
By successfully crushing WTM, Team Vetscape also proved that veterans are capable of monumental achievements regardless of prior injuries (sustained from years of military service). Performing well with the WTM mission highlighted their adapt-and-overcome and come-together-as-a-team mentality… it accentuated their resilience. These athletes have grit and perseverance. They live and breathe Vetscape’s motto, “#GetThroughIt.”
As a civilian, I have found that working with Team Vetscape has been incredibly uplifting and refreshing, while at times humbling. My involvement with the team has opened my eyes to a situation that is often overlooked in our society – the wellbeing of our veterans once they leave the military and transition back to civilian life. In just a few months, I have learned so much about the military and veteran communities. Hearing veterans’ stories and experiences has been heartbreaking, but seeing their transformations after finding purpose again through Vetscape has been encouraging and moving. Being a part of all of the good that Vetscape represents has been amazing. Knowing what Vetscape members have been accomplishing to help these kinships thrive has been heartening. It has empowered me more than ever to, as a civilian, do whatever I can to help with this movement. Our veterans… our heroes deserve more attention, assistance and compassion.
Vetscape’s goals overlap very much with what I do each day as a lifestyle, fitness and nutrition coach. Just like Vetscape, I help others find purpose in their lives. I feel that even as a civilian, you too can find a connection with a group like Vetscape.
Being a part of Vetscape has been such a great ride for me that I have found myself needing to share this movement with you (civilians AND veterans)!
Bamboo Core and Vetscape unite
From here on out, Bamboo Core will be hosting a page on this site dedicated to Team Vetscape. Through this channel, you will be able to stay connected to all of the fantastic happenings within the Vetscape community. I am hopeful that by spreading awareness about this meaningful non-profit organization, I will be able to provide important insight into veteran issues and in turn create a ripple effect… one where veterans will find the help and support they and their family members need through a community that shares common ground.
Great adventures are on the horizon
The World’s Toughest Mudder race was just the beginning. Vetscape members are currently drafting details for future challenges. OooooWeeee – stay tuned! They are busily working hard but could use some outside support.
You can help!
Millions of veterans are suffering in silence. Vetscape needs your help and support to continue our efforts to end the silence, and get these veterans out and exploring the endless possibilities in the community they share with you. Please help Vetscape help veterans find their next mission in life.
Here’s what you can do
- Participate in Vetscape’s latest fundraiser… donate $25 and you will receive an Official Team Vetscape T-Shirt similar to the one my fur-baby Tucker and I are “modeling” below. Raised funds will go to the creation of Return to Base (RTB) in Hawai’i, a one-of-a-kind sanctuary and place of healing for both veterans and their families.
