Got a Meeting? Take a Walk

Yesterday I asked you to take part in this week’s wellness challenge by walking for 10 minutes each day this week. To continue with the walking theme, I am following up yesterday’s post by sharing a three minute Ted talk that may help you crush the challenge.

Sitting is the new smoking

That TED talk is called “Got a Meeting? Take a Walk” and it was delivered in 2013 by the author, speaker and business innovator, Nilofer MerchantMerchant begins this talk by stating the alarming statistic that people sit for an average of 9.3 hours a day, which is more than the average 7.7 hours spent sleeping. She then posits that because of its grave health consequences, “sitting is the new smoking.”

Got a Meeting? Take a Walk

To help with this epidemic, Merchant suggests that people get off their derrieres and move more on a daily basis. She encourages sedentary office workers to adopt a healthy and productive approach to meetings – one that involves walking and talking instead of sitting and talking.

Instead of a meeting in a conference room, coffee shop, or office, she suggests taking a walk. This small change can improve the lives and health of desk jockeys by getting them to move more throughout the week.


Walk the talk

Please put aside three minutes to watch, “Got a Meeting? Take a Walk” and listen as Merchant explains the benefits of walking meetings, including out-of-the-box thinking and how fresh air provides a fresh perspective… and next time you have a meeting – as Merchant puts it – walk the talk.

Kill your meeting room

The idea of walking meetings stir up many practical questions, such as,

  • “How do you take notes when you are walking and talking?”
  • “What about whiteboards?”
  • “What about cell phone reception?”
